How to Choose Between Zapier, Make and n8n.

By Hazen Gardner · 7 August 2026 · 2 min read

Some providers stick to the platform they know best. The right tool depends on the job.

Zapier. Fastest to ship, simplest logic.

Best for straightforward, linear automations. Trigger, one or two actions, done. Its app library is enormous, so it connects to almost anything with minimal setup. Where it struggles is complex branching logic and cost at high volume.

Make. More logic, still visual.

Handles multi-branch logic, loops, and error handling more gracefully than Zapier, while staying visual and relatively fast to build in. It's often the right choice once a workflow needs conditional paths Zapier can't express cleanly.

n8n. Self-hostable, most flexible, most technical.

Self-hostable and capable of almost anything a workflow tool can do, including custom code steps inline. The tradeoff is a steeper build and maintenance curve, which matters less once you have someone maintaining it for you.

When none of them are the answer.

Some processes need judgement, such as reading unstructured text, triaging by content or drafting a response. That's when an AI agent or custom code is the right call.

The real question.

The useful question is what this specific process needs. That's why I don't sell one tool. I pick per build, sometimes mixing more than one in a single system.
